When Teachers Criticize Children

Not long ago a school teacher got into hot water for calling her students "rude" and "lazy" on her blog. She carelessly thought her comments were only reaching her friends and family.

With the rise of social media I think we are going to see more inappropriate sharing on the Internet.

I recently spoke about this issue on a radio program called "Can You Stop Teachers From 'Dissing' Families, Children, Peers or Your School Online?" The program was produced by Bam! Radio and hosted by Holly Elissa Bruno. You can listen to it here.

Although the radio program was addressed primarily at school teachers and child care center staff, the issue can affect family child care providers. You should be careful when sharing any information about the children or parents in your program, particularly online.

You should assume that anything you say on your Facebook page or in emails or on your website or blog could become public. Therefore, it's wise to keep any critical comments to yourself. If you don't, your reputation can be damaged. Be professional in how you treat everyone.

Have you seen other child care providers post negative comments about children or parents on the Internet?
