Second Edition of the Business Administration Scale (BAS) Now Available
The Business Administration Scale (BAS) is a reliable and easy-to-use tool for measuring the overall quality of family child care business and professional practices.
This second edition provides an enhanced focus on family support and engagement. It also includes additional information on how to interpret the BAS indicators that make it much more user friendly.
Written by Teri Talan and Paula Jorde Bloom of the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership, the BAS is also available online and in Spanish.
The BAS measures quality on a 7-point scale in 10 items:
* Qualifications and Professional Development
* Income and Benefits
* Work Environment
* Fiscal Management
* Record Keeping
* Risk Management
* Provider-Parent Communication
* Community Resources
* Marketing and Public Relations
* Provider as Employer
The authors of the BAS used many of my books to help them develop this quality tool.
At the time it was first published in 2009 I wrote, “The BAS is a long awaited resource tool that will help improve the quality of care in the family child care field. It is the first valid and reliable instrument to measure the business practices of providers. This valuable book should be used by any organization interested in increasing the business skills of family child care providers in their community.”
See here for more information about the BAS book ($26.00) which is available from Redleaf Press. And from Teachers College Press.
The Getting Ready for the BAS module is a self-paced, online module that is designed for family child care providers who are getting ready for a formal BAS assessment or just want to learn about best practices.
It is also a great tool for those who provide technical assistance to providers or teach courses on family child care.
There are no eligibility requirements to take the Getting Ready module.
You can register for this module at any time. Illinois providers can count this module toward required training for ExceleRate Illinois.
