What is a "COVID-19 Surcharge"?

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, many family child care providers are spending more money to help keep the children and their families safe.

These additional expenses can include:

• Bleach

• Cleaning supplies

• Computers for distance learning

• Curriculum expenses

• Deep cleaning or private sanitation services

• Disinfectants

• Expenses associated with reopening (painting, construction, remodeling, etc.)

• Food deliveries and other delivery expenses

• Gloves

• Hand sanitizers

• Masks

• Paper towels

• Personal protective equipment (PPE)

• Plastic shields

• Room dividers

• Sanitizers

• Soap

• Taking CDA classes or seeking Accreditation from the National Association for Family Child Care

• Thermometers

• Zoom subscription

You can deduct 100% of the cost of these items purchased for your business. Because of these extra expenses, it is not unreasonable to ask your parents to help pay for them. If you want to add an additional fee to the weekly or monthly parent payment, call it a "COVID-19 Surcharge."

Such a surcharge should be temporary until COVID-19 recedes and you no longer have these additional expenses. Parents want to keep their children safe, and they should be expected to help pay for these extra expenses that ensure their protection.

Charge more?

At the same time that you have these extra expenses, you may want to consider reevaluating your rates. COVID-19 has reduced the income of most family child care providers, in some cases significantly so. If you are open and caring for fewer children, it is likely you are under greater stress trying to meet their needs, either in person or through distance learning. It's a lot to handle!

It's not unreasonable to consider raising your rates at this time. September is the most common month when providers have traditionally raised their rates. If you haven't done so in years, consider doing so now. Many providers raise their rates every year.

Whether or not you charge a "COVID-19 Surcharge" or raise your rates, you deserve to be recognized for doing a terrific job in this time of crisis. Thank you!
